Born in Canonsburg, PA in 1936, and raised by her father Harry Schmidt and her mother Annie (Deakin) Schmidt, she graduated from Canonsburg High School, married her husband, James E Craver in 1956, and remained in the Pittsburgh area until 1972. She especially enjoyed living in a wonderful residential spot called Eastmont, where she was an avid member of the Eastmont Bowling League, and a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Later, Alice lived much of her life (43 years) in the town of Lexington, SC, where she developed many wonderful friendships.
Before moving to SC, she enjoyed two fun years living in the small town of Contoocook, NH, not far from where her son lives today, and not far from where she lived-out her final years.
Alice was never afraid of hard work. She kept a spotless home, full of house plants, especially African Violets, and loved gardening, cooking, and her pet birds and dogs. She was especially fond of Dachshunds and owned 11 of them throughout her life. Alice once bred a litter of 6 Dachshund puppies, and for a long while she cared for 3 Dachshunds at the same time.
She cooked wonderful meals, often from scratch, using fresh ingredients. She would bake and create a variety of delicious meals, desserts, and other treats for her family and friends. She was known for her homemade spaghetti sauce, homemade pizza, apple pies, and sand tart cookies.
She loved gardening, whether flowers, vegetables, or indoor potted plants. Her flower gardens were a beautiful sight to see, were admired by her neighbors, and kept her happily busy. But even more than cooking and gardening, Alice loved children, “adopting” neighbors’ children as her grandchildren, and spoiling them with love.
Predeceased by her husband of 59 years and her siblings Harry, Doris, and Bob, she is survived by one of her four siblings, Carol, and by her only child, James E Craver, Jr & her daughter-in-law, Heidi Craver, both of Concord, NH, two grandsons, Kurt Craver of N. Granby, CT, Drew Craver of Manchester, NH, and four great-grandchildren, Allison, Thomas, Amelia, & Dylan, all of whom loved her and will miss her dearly.
Next Spring, in a graveside service, Alice will be buried next to her husband at Woodridge Memorial Park in Lexington, South Carolina.
Alice asks that her spirit to be kind to others, put in a good day’s work, and provide the best you can for your friends and family, will live on in those who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the ASPCA in her name.
