Don was born in Boston, MA on February 20, 1937 to Gertrude M. and John A. Lane. He had two brothers, John Lane and Brian Lane and a sister Mary (Sally) Lane Gould. He graduated from Newton High School, Newton, MA in 1955 and went on to Harvard College and graduated class of 1959. That same year he married his best friend, Mona Kean. Don went to work for IBM and was transferred to NH, where he and Mona made a home in Hopkinton. In 1966, Don left IBM to form a new company, EDP Resources. EDP Resources was eventually sold and he joined Software International in Andover, MA as Executive VP. Following Software International, he worked for several startup software companies. After he retired, he went to work for his son Mark who owns Coed Sportswear. He helped build the sales force and believed that working for Coed was the best job of all.
Don and his wife Mona have been residents of Hopkinton for sixty-two years. They raised their four children in Hopkinton and have enjoyed being grandparents to eleven grandchildren.
Don is survived by his wife Ramona Kean (Mona), daughter Jennifer Lane Pope and her husband Sandy of South Yarmouth, MA and their four children, Matthew and his wife Sarah (Battista), Christopher and his wife Emily (Worcester), Katherine and Julia; son Donald, Jr. of Newfields, NH and his two children, Mark and Maria; son Mark and his wife Anne of Hampton Falls, NH and their three children, Abigail and her husband Nick Smith, Eric and Emma; son David and his wife Jeanne of Eliot, ME and their two children, Rachel and David 2nd; his sister Mary (Sally) Gould and many nieces and nephews.
Don was very active in his community. He was president of the PTO prior to having children in the school system. He established and was president of the Hopkinton Little League and Babe Ruth programs and coached for twenty years. He was instrumental in the startup of the town girls’ softball program. He was a selectman from 2002 through 2008. During his tenure as selectman, he was instrumental in the creation and building of Houston Fields which offer many of the town’s sports fields plus a playground and walking paths. He spearheaded the financing for the Slusser Senior Center. He was active on many other select board committees including the Open Space Committee and the Conservation Committee, which ultimately resulted in the purchase of properties used for town recreational purposes. He is a past president of the Hopkinton Historical Society and became chairman until he resigned in 2020. When he was asked to become commissioner of the town’s cemetery, he said yes. He served the people well in this capacity for six years.
Don was an active communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Contoocook. When the church decided to coordinate and build a new church in Henniker (now called St. Theresa’s), he became an active member of the building committee. He was a Lector and a Eucharistic Minister. He loved his faith.
Finally, Don loved baseball especially the Red Sox and passed that love along to his family. He loved collecting baseball cards, license plates and coins with his children and grandchildren.
Don was once told he had a “saturnine countenance” but he was really very cheerful, warm, gentle, funny and loving and despite his label, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He will be sorely missed by all.
