Harold Hill Matava

He was born in Wentworth a son of Harold and Marion (Hill) Matava. He was raised in Rumney and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1944.

Harold served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II. Following the military, he graduated from Plymouth State College in 1952.

After teaching in Lebanon for one year, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany. He returned to New Hampshire and became a Handwriting Consultant working in schools throughout New Hampshire and Massachusetts. During this period, he earned his Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Boston University. He later taught in the Concord NH School District for 18 years, and was the Summer School Director for two years before retiring in 1988.

He was an active member in the Pembroke Congregational Church for many years, serving on several boards and committees. He enjoyed traveling, hiking, outdoor activities and sporting events.

Harold is predeceased by his wife, Barbara (Hoyt) Matava; two sons, Jeffrey Hoyt Matava and Bruce Robert Matava; 2 sisters, Corrine Ayers and Rachel Barvin.

He is survived by a daughter, Lynn M. Matava of Pembroke, 2 sisters, Germaine Beresney of Manchester, NJ and Janet McCormack of Thornton, NH; a brother, Arnols Matava of East Montpelier, VT; 2 grandsons Jeffrey Matava and his wife Lauren of Canterbury and Matthew Matava and his wife Katie of Sanbornton and 5 great granddaughters.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018 from 6 to 8pm at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main Street, Concord. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at the Pembroke Congregational Church, 301 Pembroke St, Pembroke, NH. Following a time of refreshment and fellowship, the interment will be held at the Franklin Cemetery in Franklin.

Memorial Donations if desired may be made to the Pembroke Congregational Church and Concord VNA.
