James W. Varrill 94, a long time resident of Concord, passed away on December 6, 2023 at his home where he lived for almost 60 years. He was born in Barre, Vermont on March 4, 1929, and the only child of Roy and Esther (Niles) Varrill.
He attended Barre Public Schools, graduating from Spaulding High School in 1947. He went on to further his education at the University of Vermont and Burdett Business College in Boston. He enlisted for 3 years in the Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze stars and the United Nations Service Medal. After being honorably discharged, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Fielder on December 18, 1953.
Jim and Marilyn lived in West Hartford, CT and several Pittsburgh, PA suburbs from 1954-1964. He worked for the Hartford Insurance Company during that time. After moving with their 5 children to Concord in April 1964, he started working for the Vermont Mutual Insurance Company, retiring as Resident Vice President of New Hampshire in 1994 after 30 years.
Jim and Marilyn enjoyed many happy years together after his retirement until her passing in February 2013. Jim enjoyed spending time with family, especially at the family camp on Partridge Lake in Littleton, NH, just sitting around the campfire, watching all the kids, sipping on a glass of Chardonnay, brought him much joy.
After Marilyn’s passing, he went on to live independently in his home up until 2 months of his passing. You could find him in his favorite spot during the warm months, sitting on the front screened-in porch, keeping an eye on the neighborhood and on Sundays, after church, he would have his favorite lunch, a Bloody Mary and a bowl of popcorn. He also enjoyed his daily walks around the neighborhood and was always happy to stop and socialize. Jim was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Concord for over 55 years.
He is survived by his four children; sons John and Dan (Judy) Varrill of Concord, daughters Susan (Brad) Mar-latt of Buena Vista, VA, Cindy (Ron) Dubuc of Loudon, six grandchildren; Brian (Brandy) Marlatt, Tim (Casey) Marlatt, Rebecca (Blake) Owen, all of Virginia, Ryan Dubuc of Webster, Holly (Kevin) Crowley of Concord, and Danielle (Jeff) Mock of Bradford. He was “Papa Jim” to his nine great grandchildren; Chloe, Thea, Charlotte, and Sophie Marlatt, Olivia Owen, Hannah and Sa¬die Dubuc, Adelyn and Jack Crowley, and Jacob Mock. He is also survived by step-grandchildren Beth (Jim) Krause, and her children Chloe and Jonah, Stephanie (Lee) Beaton and their children Emmery and Donavan, numerous nieces and nephews from Vermont and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of almost 60 years and his son David who died on April 6, 1978.
We would like to thank the caregivers from Age at Home for their companionship and care during the past six weeks.
