Ruth Mae Hummel

Ruth is survived by her children, Suzanne Gielen and her husband George Gielen, of Greenville, NC, Debra Worley of Flagler Beach, FL, Betsy Black and her husband Darryl Black of Hollis, NH and Jack Hummel II and his wife Jane Hummel of Loudon, NH. Ruth also leaves behind her seven grandchildren: Jennifer Rostron, Laura Giles, Michael McLane, Spencer Black, Olivia Black, Shawn Burke, and Emily Hummel; and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack L. Hummel with whom she had lived in Milton, VT for 27 years.

Ruth was born on October 6, 1929 in Shamokin, PA to Stanley and Dorothy Roadarmel. She attended the nursing program at Geisinger in Danville, PA, obtaining her RN degree in 1950. She married her high school sweetheart, Jack L. Hummel in 1953. Over the course of their marriage and Jack's meteorology career, they lived in State College, PA, Essex Junction, VT, Alexandria, VA, Absecon, NJ, and then, in 1971, settled back in VT, in Milton. After raising their four children they opened a Bed & Breakfast, Hummel Haus.

Ruth and Jack opened their home, a beautiful colonial built in 1789, to old friends over many summers. Ruth was a wonderful cook and baker. Her family will forever remember her homemade coconut cream cake and vanilla custard ice cream. Ruth and Jack were avid Penn State Nittany Lion fans and tailgated at many football games.

Ruth loved being a housewife and raising her four children. She leaves them with fond memories of good food (especially those desserts) a love of music and fine living. Ruth, a staunch Republican, enjoyed Fox News and shopping at the former Macy's in Bedford, NH.

Ruth's family would like to thank the staffs at Bentley Commons, Bedford, NH and the Birches at Concord, NH for their wonderful care and compassion.

A celebration of her life will be held at 12:00 PM at Bennett Funeral Home, of Concord, NH on Sunday, July 31st.
