Ruth Mary Stephens Pollack died in Concord, NH, on March 24, 2016, after a brief illness. She was born in Mineola, Long Island, on October 13, 1924, to Doris and Waldo Stephens. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Jerome M. Pollack.
In keeping with Jerry’s career in academia, Ruth lived in several places in the Northeast. A quarter-century ago, they moved into a long-time family house dear to her heart in New Hampton, NH. Ruth was an accomplished artist in weaving, sculptural metal-working, glass bead lamp-work, and fine silver jewelry, with much of the latter placed in shops of the League of NH Craftsmen and several independent galleries.
She attended Mount Holyoke College and the University of Wisconsin, and earned graduate degrees from the University of Oklahoma and Union Theological Seminary in New York. She had a life-long interest in environmental and social issues, cooking, gardening, and her extensive collection of orchids.
Ruth is survived by her children Cassy Pickard, Nancy Travers, and Michael Pollack, granddaughters Elizabeth Pickard Dean and Sarah Pickard Mandel, and great-grandchildren Charlotte Dean and Max Mandel.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Ruth’s memory may be made to the Gordon Nash Public Library in New Hampton, NH, 03256. A memorial service will be held in the Fall.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Bennett Funeral Home of Concord
