I loved working in the "old ER" in registration...and looked forward to the very early hours when Shirley would arrive.."Shirley Time" was the best time of the day!

I will miss the way only you could bring a bright shade of red to my face with your off the cuff comments. You will always live on in my heart as that very speacial person who made the world a little better place to live.

I loved my days when they started with a call from Shirley first thing to the Help Desk. She had such an incredible sense of humor and would have me in stiches in no time at all. She would try to tell me she didn't know computers but I knew better. Shirley was a strong, intelligent and proud women and someone that I truly admired. I will miss her.

What a beautiful memorial to your Mother David. I learned a lot from her as well. She was a mentor and a hero for me too. Shirl was not only smart, beautiful inside and out, and all the good things she would hit us for saying, but she was a lady and a true friend. She loved her children more than life and the CEMA docs right after her family. I loved working with your Mom at the hospital and for CEMA.   She loved unconditionally. I'm sure she is staightening things out in Heaven as I write. God bless you all ~ if there is one thing she always knew it was that she could count on you all and she knew how very much you loved her. I will never forget her.

Such Wonderful memories of Shirley.  My thoughts and prayers are with the famiily at this difficult time.  May she rest in peace.  Shirley will be missed!

So many memories of Shirley, from being the calming presence when bringing my son to the Emergency Room so very many years ago, to working with her years later, to playing poker with her and the girls...only to have her take all my nickels... I loved her attitude, her sense of humor, and most of all, her friendship.  She will always hold a special place in my heart. My condolences to her family.  She was indeed a special lady.

HERO

Strength, courage, and endurance were strictly male characteristics growing up in Massachusetts during the late 60's and 70's. I worshiped Bobby Orr, Larry Bird, and Yaz as well as John Wayne, and Clint. Great at what they accomplished in their respected field, but true courage served me breakfast every morning.   
How could a woman be an idol, when she couldn't score the winning goal or subdue the bad guy? I was blind for so many years to the tragedies and hardships that visited a physically tiny women that would not stop striving for excellence in front of my eyes, but I would ask her to move so I could watch the game. 
A stroke in my youthful eyes were a sign of weakness, and surely not something that would inflict a hero. Breaking both arms, pneumonia, and working to raise 5 children alone is no big deal. Starting a job at $6.11 an hour midlife is the sign of a quitter hanging them up and not looking to the future. 
Being wrong is one thing but not seeing true strength, courage, and endurance under my nose until it's too late is a hard pill to swallow.
I love you expected and easy, but convincing a tiny proud women that she truly is your hero and every male athlete/actor/idol takes a backseat is another thing. We all wish for a 100 more years with Susu, but I only ask for a minute to say thank you for opening my eyes to the fact that true strength, courage, and endurance doesn't have to where a number.

Shirley was a remarkable, amazing, wonderful woman. I had many early morning chats with her at Concord Hospital, and I loved her. She loved her family and she loved her ER docs. :)
