After a courageous battle with COPD, Clara Janssen Maddox, of Conover, passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johannes W. Janssen and Elizabeth Cooper Janssen; her brother, Charles Janssen; her sisters, Lillian Bruce Janssen and Leslie Jeanne Janssen; her half-brother, Jan Walter Janssen; and her beloved husband, James P. Maddox.
Clara leaves behind a large family who loved her, and who were loved by her— sons, Patrick Maddox (Sara), James Maddox (Marylyn), and Robert Taylor (Laura); her daughter, Suzanne Maddox White (Rex); her grandchildren, Josh & Ian Maddox, Meredith & Mackenzie Maddox, Ashley, Cassie, & Zach Taylor, and Janssen White; along with a great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Clara was born in Nashville Tennessee, grew up in Bethesda Maryland, and lived in many parts of Virginia (Roanoke, Thaxton) and North Carolina (Raleigh, Salisbury, Conover). She owned and operated a successful and award-winning advertising agency, The Maddox Agency, in Roanoke, Virginia for many years before her retirement. Her life was marked by her driven, progressive, and creative spirit. She enjoyed spending her time storytelling with family, playing bridge, entertaining with friends, taking walks in the woods and by creeks, foraging wild mushrooms, gardening, crafting, and enjoying family adventures at the beach.
Her family will honor and celebrate her life at the North Carolina Coast.
