David Elwood Gill

David Elwood Gill, age 82, of Hickory, NC, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory. David was born in Syracuse, NY, to the late Russell Elwood Gill and Ada Mae Golby Gill.

In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by daughter, Paula Christine; brothers, Russell Gill, Howard Gill; and sister, Ethel Hark.

David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a certified welder and mechanic at age 16. He never met a stranger, and had a very giving spirit. It wasn’t uncommon for him to bring home people in need and help them get on their feet. He loved gardening, nature, motorcycling and being outside. He was especially known to his family, for his special breakfast, smorgasbords and dagwood sandwiches.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Marion Gill; children, Sherry Haynes, (Bob), Sheryl Briggs, (L.C): William Towe (Revonda), Randall Towe (Karen), Kelly Cloninger (Mark); 21 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Donald Gill and wife, Judy; sisters, Mary Gardner (Neil), Margaret Parson; and many nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.
