Harriet Mauney Lehman of Conover passed away on June 1, 2026 at the age of 73. Harriet was born on Saturday, July 26, 1952 to the late Frank Smyre Mauney and Mary Louise Little Mauney. In addition to her parents, Harriet was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Little Mauney.
Harriet was a graduate of Newton Conover High School and Western Carolina University, where she met her husband Nathan, although they did not reconnect until a number of years later. Harriet was a dedicated elementary school teacher for 40 years in local public and private schools, as well as three years in Maine. She taught second grade for most of those years and developed creative and memorable lesson plans that made learning incredibly fun – she was beloved by hundreds of students and by her fellow teachers, many of whom were her cherished friends. Through the years, many people have told stories about how she taught their children and how they all remember her class so fondly.
Harriet and Nathan were avid campers and loved the North Carolina mountains and being in nature. For many years, they lived on Lake Lookout, and loved relaxing on their back porch or being on the water in their canoes or pontoon boat. They also loved music, especially bluegrass, and loved attending local concerts, listening to Nathan play, or listening to their favorite musicians at home. After moving back to Conover, they were delighted to be closer to old friends and to make new ones in their neighborhood.
Most of all, they loved their dogs, the last of which, Lizzie, has been adopted by a neighbor. Lizzie, a gorgeous brown poodle with the sweetest temperament, is one of the great loves of Harriet’s life.
Those left to cherish Harriet’s memory are her sister Margaret Mauney Tabb (Lewis) of Pittsboro, NC, her niece Sarah Tabb (Jose Garza) of Scarsdale, NY, her nephew Skip Tabb (Rachel) of Cary, NC, who would go camping with Nathan and her when he was young and many, many treasured friends.
A service to celebrate Harriet’s life will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church in Claremont, NC on Tuesday, June 9 at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00. Burial will follow the service in Conover City Cemetery.
