Joe Herman Schell

Joe was preceded in death by his first wife Gladys Schell; his second wife of 34 years, Louise Graham Schell; brothers, Jerry Schell, Bill Schell, John Schell, Hamp Schell; sisters, Sue Jessup, Marjorie Schell, Mary Schell; and stepdaughter, Betty Burris.

A proud veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, Joe served with honor during World War II as a B-17 and B-24 pilot and co-pilot. Rising to the rank of First Lieutenant, he completed 30 combat missions in the European Theater, and the plane was shot during the war. He survived with the same courage and resilience that defined his service. For his service, Joe was awarded the Purple Heart, the World War II Victory Medal, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the European, African, Middle Eastern, Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star.

Joe’s 104 years were marked not only by heroism, but by quiet strength, humility, and a generous spirit that touched everyone who knew him. His long and remarkable life leaves behind a legacy of service, resilience, and love that will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to share in his journey.

Those left to cherish Joe’s memory are his daughters, Cathy Oliver (Larry), Patty Richardson (Ritchie); stepchildren, Alice James, Judy Watson, David Grahm; three grandchildren; four step grandchildren; three great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 24, 2025 from 1:30 pm to 2:15 pm at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 217 2nd Ave NE, Conover, NC 28613.

A funeral service with military rites to honor Joe will follow at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ on Monday, November 24, 2025 at 2:30pm with Revered Peggy Stout officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Youth Domestic Missions at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 217 2nd Ave NE, Conover, NC 28613.
