Born January 16, 1921, in Yadkin County, she was the daughter of the late William Mannie Matthews and Ada Belle Hutchins.
Lillie was a member of a quartet. They had some airtime on local radio stations. She then moved to Baltimore and worked in the Glenn L. Martins aircraft manufacturing facility during WWII. Lillie was one of the “Rosie the Riveters”. While in Baltimore, she met the love of her life, Craig Marion Spencer.
Lillie loved gardening, cooking, and spoiling the grandkids. She loved to entertain and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Lillie was a member of Catawba United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Chapter 124) in Catawba.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Craig Marion Spencer; five brothers; two sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Houston and husband Ronald; grandson, Jimmy Boyles and wife Shannon; great-grandson, LCpl Corey Boyles (currently serving in the United States Marine Corps); great-granddaughter, Madison Boyles.
A memorial service will be held at Catawba Methodist Church, 207 E Central Ave Catawba NC 28609, on Saturday Jul 14 at 11am. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 10am. Inurnment will take place in the church cemetery after the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton, NC 28658.
