

Mable "Edith" Pope, 86, of Newton went home to be with her Lord and savior on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Mable was born in Huntersville, NC on October 2, 1938 to the late William Craven Christenbury and Annie Barnette Christenbury. She was a 1956 graduate of Bandys High School where she was in Glee Club, 4-H, F.H.A. Club, and played basketball and softball. She spent her younger years working in downtown Newton at the Eagle Dime Store where the love of life, Dewey, would wait for her to get off work every evening to drive her home. They eloped in Gaffney, South Carolina on November 22, 1959. She joined the First Assembly of God in Newton where she worked at their daycare and also taught Sunday school. She later joined Fairgrove UMC where she continued to teach Sunday school until her health declined. She enjoyed reading and read her Bible 3 times front to back. She also enjoyed embroidering and making scrapbooks of Christian poems, scripture and photos she collected.
She is predeceased by her parents, brother Dale Christenbury, sister Frances Butler, and daughter Gracie Mae.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Dewey Pope, son Kenneth Pope, brother Jimmy Christenbury, sister in laws Margaret, Marie, Linda and brother in laws Howard Fred and Larry. Special Family, Jeremiah and Audrey Harris and adopted grandchildren Brooklynn, Emma, Colton and Zaine. Friends Mark and Janice Pogue and her hairdresser of 20 years Rhonda Goodson.
A celebration of life will be held at 11am Friday, June 6, 2025 at Christ Church Fairgrove with Reverend Harley Scalf officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetary.
