Nell passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22, 2026, surrounded by her family and held in all the love her heart could possibly hold. A woman of deep and abiding faith, Nell loved her husband and family with all that she was, giving them her whole heart and a lifetime of love.
Nell was happiest in her garden, where she had a remarkable gift for growing just about anything—from beautiful azaleas to towering 12-foot corn stalks. Her garden was a reflection of her patience, care, and love for the simple beauty of nature. She also delighted in the birds that visited her backyard, especially the cardinals, and faithfully kept her hummingbirds welcoming those tiny, vibrant visitors back year after year.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Gene Self, Coy Self, Bobby Self and Michael Self; sisters Merle Rhoney, and Colleen Boston.
Nell is survived by her husband of 66 years, John Phillip Baker; sons, Tommy Baker and wife Pam; Darrell Baker and wife Gina; brothers, David Self and Farrell Self; sisters, Joanne Starnes, Judy Lovelace, and Sandy Leatherman; grandchildren, Amber Baker McFetters, Chelsea Radke and husband Jake Radke, Haden Baker, and Madison Baker; great grandchildren, Bear, Roosevelt and Cheyenne Radke.
Receiving of friends will be held at 1pm, Monday, October 26, 2026, prior to the service.
A funeral service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church Monday, October 26, 2026, at 2pm with Pastor Luke Self and Pastor Anton Lagoutine officiating. Burial will follow at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery.
