Raynell Matthews Korn, age 88, of Catawba, passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born March 31, 1933, in Catawba County, the daughter of the late Oren James Matthews and Beulah Leona Miller Matthews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Troy Korn; brothers, Bobby Matthews, Jimmy Matthews, Ralph Matthews, Fred Matthews, James Matthews; sisters, Helen Murray and Elizabeth Blackburn.
She is survived by daughters, Teresa Korn, Jill Ervin (John), and Sandy Helms (Ricky); grandchildren, Clara Ray Millsaps (Blake), Maddie Martin, and Cody Lutz (Erica Smith); and great-grandchild, Layla Martin.
Raynell was an athlete in high school, and an excellent basketball player. After high school she graduated from Clevenger Business College, and worked at Ridgeview Hosiery in Newton. She was cook and co-owner for 40+ years at Catawba Restaurant and Grill, whipping out delicious home cooked meals and desserts, including “much sought after” persimmon pudding, lemon meringue pie, dumplings, and squash casserole. She enjoyed not only cooking and baking but yard work, flowers and crocheting.
In retirement, she babysat three fabulous grandkids and enjoyed every moment with them. She would get creative with the children, building forts of yarn and painting river rocks. She enjoyed working jig-saw puzzles, deemed by her family as the “Jig Saw Puzzler Queen”.
She was a lifetime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, involved throughout the years in many different aspects of the church. She was a loving, dedicated and supportive wife and mother, with seemingly endless energy and drive. Raynell gave so much of herself to her family. She was an example of hard work, kindness, positivity, generosity, sacrifice, and love. She was an awesome and beautiful soul who touched many lives and made them better! We lost an angel and heaven gained one!
