

Vera Mae Drum Arndt, age 98, of Newton, NC, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2017 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC. Born April 2, 1919 in Catawba County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Gossie Durant Drum and Annie Lee Hawn Drum.
Vera graduated from Balls Creek Consolidated School in 1936 and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton, NC, the United Methodist Women, and served as a Director of Camp Carolwood in Lenoir, NC, for several years. She was active for over 20 years as a volunteer at Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministries and Catawba Valley Medical Center. In 1998, Vera received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. She enjoyed participating in the Thursday Book Club and The Little Brook Garden Club. Vera loved to work in her yard and flower garden. Her positive attitude and faith in God were an example to all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Floyd Arndt; son, Carroll Brevard Arndt; daughters-in-law, Lucy Bahnson Arndt and Catherine Tedder Arndt; sisters, Frances Josephine Drum Gilley and Colleen Drum; brothers, Ted C. Drum, Sr., J. Clifton Drum, and Boyd H. Drum.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Steve D. Arndt and wife Karen of Newton, NC; grandchildren, Laura Medvic, Melinda Campos, Caroline Livingood, Alexander S. Arndt, Andrew J. Arndt, and Chris E. Riddle; great-grandchildren, George, Ross, Sara, Anna, Laken, and Zane; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at First United Methodist Church in Newton, NC, with Rev. Lara Greene officiating. The family will receive friends in the Gomedela Room prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. A private graveside service for family will be held at Mt. View United Methodist Church in Claremont, NC, prior to the church service.
