Albert Weldon Mills, affectionately known since childhood as "Bubba," passed away in Conroe on June 25, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on October 20, 1942, in Pearsall, Texas, he was the eldest of three children born to Alice Lee Wells Mills and Weldon Thomas Mills. A proud sixth-generation Texan and a man of Christian faith, he possessed an exceptionally sharp mind. He skipped the fourth grade and grew up to be a multi-talented young man, famously becoming the La Feria Yo-Yo Champion in 1954 and later serving as Senior Class President of La Feria High School graduating class of 1960. Many who knew him remarked on his brilliant intellect paired with a wonderfully quirky and eccentric charm.
He attended Baylor University, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and actively participating in the Air Force ROTC. Following graduation in 1964, he commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force during the height of the Cold War. Utilizing his financial background, he spent three years at Suffolk County Air Force Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, providing critical logistical support to the nuclear missile units protecting the East Coast. He then accepted orders to the remote Thule Air Base in Greenland—America’s frontline Arctic tripwire for nuclear detection—navigating the harsh, isolated elements with distinction until his honorable discharge.
Upon returning to Texas, Albert earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from his alma mater, Baylor University. Equipped with a rare combination of legal and financial expertise, he was licensed to practice law by December 1970, eventually becoming a licensed CPA as well. He settled in Houston and launched a long, successful career in the Oil and Gas industry, working for many years as a legal auditor for Texas Eastern and its successor companies. He established a long-term residence in Conroe, Texas, to make his home near his family.
Later in life, demonstrating a deep sense of filial duty, he moved to Gatesville, Texas, to personally care for his mother, Alice, who blessed the family until her passing five years ago at the remarkable age of 102. Following her passing, he returned to Conroe for his final years.
Albert loved the classic elements of Texas life. He was an avid sports fan, had a lifelong passion for buying and trading cars, and took pride in his massive collection of cowboy boots. He was a devoted fan of traditional country and western music and a passionate barbecue aficionado, making it a personal mission to travel the state trying every legendary joint recommended by Texas Monthly. Above all, he loved his family, maintaining a close and supportive relationship with his children, siblings, and extended family.
Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Weldon Mills, and his sister, Mary Alice "Sue" Stewart. He is survived by his children, Kathryn "Katy" Mills Anderson and her husband, Austin, and Hayden Mills, and his fiancée, Michelle, all of Houston; and his stepdaughters, Jennifer Lowe and Meridith Carter. He is also survived by his younger brother, Tom Mills, and his wife, Nina; his brother-in-law, Al Stewart; and niece and nephews, Lindley Stewart, Amy Thompson, Keith Mills Stewart, and Matthew Mills.
A graveside service will be held at Pearsall Cemetery, 1675 E Colorado St, Pearsall, TX 78061, US, on July 3, 2026, at 3:00 pm.
