Al was born in Houston, the eldest of 7 children. He grew up in Spring Branch and joined the National Guard while in high school at Spring Branch High School. After graduating in 1956, he joined the Air Force and ended up being stationed at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.
It was there that he met the love of his life on July 6th 1958, 66 years ago. Al and Sylvia were engaged on Christmas Eve in 1958 and married on April 7th, 1959. His daughter Debbie was born exactly a year later. He stayed in the service until August of 1960, and the family moved to his home in Houston, Texas. When they moved to Texas, he started working as a salesman at Peden Iron and Steel. In 1961, they welcomed their first son, Steve, and in 1968 their youngest son, Joe, was born. They moved from Houston to Spring in 1974, where they have lived since. After working for Peden for almost 20 years, he then found employment with Canusa, a piping company in The Woodlands until retiring at the age of 65.
After retirement he enjoyed gardening, spending time with grandchildren, and loved listening to music. Most recently he enjoyed communicating with friends and family online with his tablet, sharing music, funny jokes, and pictures of his favorite people and things that he loved so very much. He lived a long beautiful life and created so many wonderful memories.
Close friends and family called him “Buddy”, his wife and kids called him “Daddy” and he was known to his grandchildren as “Papaw”. He was a friend to everyone, always wearing a smile and loved his family with his entire heart and soul. We are at peace knowing he is in Heaven laughing, dancing, and singing with our lost loved ones and is no longer suffering. His legacy of love and kindness will live on through his loved ones forever and we will hold on to all of the beautiful memories for the rest of our lives.
Preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Gaston Greer, Sr. and Blanch Alma Floyd, his sisters Linda and Gloria, and his nephew Roger.
