Betty Gipson of Houston and Conroe, Texas was born on November 2, 1938, and died on December 20, 2013 of complications of breast cancer. Her older brother Don Schustereit predeceased her. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ray Gipson, her son David and wife Sue, her daughter Gayla Brainerd and husband Rick, granddaughter Lauren Brainerd, grandson Trey Brainerd, her younger brother Roger Schustereit, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless devoted friends.
She was born and raised in Victoria, Texas, the daughter of Edwin and Velva Shustereit. She graduated from Patti Welder High School, attended Trinity University, Victoria Junior College, and the University of Texas where she obtained a Bachelor of Business Degree. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Sam Houston State University.
Betty spent her life teaching and caring for those around her. She enjoyed raising her children and helping to raise her grandchildren. Betty taught special education for 20 years in the Conroe School District. She also dedicated her time to working with mentally challenged children and adults. She received many awards and honors and the love of those she touched.
She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas.
A visitation for friends and family will take place At Metcalf Funeral Directors, 1801 E. White Oak Terrace, Conroe, Texas 77304 on Monday, December 23, 2013, from 7 to 9 P.M. There will not be a traditional funeral service. Burial will take place at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Victoria, Texas, on December 26, 2013 at 11:00 O’clock.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Boy’s and Girl’s Country, Hockley, Texas, or to a charity of your choice.
