Betty Anne Hord Register went home to the Lord on December 9, 2024, at Grace Memory Care in Spring, Texas. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, teacher, and friend who will be remembered for her grace, kindness, hospitality, and love for everyone around her.
Betty was born on March 5th, 1946, in Houston, Texas, to Hazel Bullock Hord and Jasper Douglas Hord. She was the first of four children and attended Milby High School. There, she met the love of her life, Thomas Wayne Register. They began dating in 1962, and as high school sweethearts, soon became inseparable. They dated throughout high school and her graduation in 1964, and then college at the University of Houston, where she majored in Education. Upon her graduation in 1968 they married, and she began teaching while he completed his degree in Engineering. They joyfully welcomed their son, Thomas Matthew, in 1976, and soon after their daughter, Sarah Anne, in 1978. Together, they worked and grew their company, Kreiter Geartech, in Houston for almost 40 years. Wayne and Betty celebrated 56 years of marriage together.
They moved to their ranch in New Waverly, TX, in 1982; into the home where they would raise their children. The Registers were active members of Faith Lutheran Church in Huntsville, TX, where they taught their children to love and worship God and helped run the church youth group, chaperoning many service and fellowship activities and numerous trips across the state. Betty was a consummate hostess who organized countless barbeques and pool parties for the youth group, school groups, friends and family at the 4R Ranch.
After years of teaching 2nd grade in public school, Betty became the first director of Faith Lutheran School in Huntsville. She helped start the school with 40 children, and at the time of her retirement there were hundreds of students at FLS. Throughout the years she shared her love of praising Jesus with countless children and their families. Betty was a gifted teacher and hired many education majors from Sam Houston State University, helping mentor and grow their skills in the teaching profession. She was an active member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), becoming an accreditor and hosting a regional conference during her tenure. Betty was also an avid quilter, loved participating in the Huntsville Quilt Guild, and taking classes with her sister at Houston’s annual International Quilt Show. She was a certified Master Gardener and loved volunteering at her county’s Extension program. Her gorgeous flower and vegetable gardens were a testament to her green thumb and love of gardening.
When Betty retired from education, she and Wayne celebrated by traveling the world. They also transitioned their membership to Resurrection Lutheran Church in Spring, Texas around the time their first grandchild was born. Betty especially enjoyed her six grandchildren, who adored their Grandma right back. She babysat, had sleepovers, and she and Wayne were known for their epic New Year’s Eve cousin parties.
Upon her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease in 2017, Wayne cared for Betty in their home for years. When she entered memory care in 2021, they were graced with many loving and skilled professionals who blessed the family with their compassionate care until Betty’s passing.
Betty is proceeded in death by her parents, JD and Hazel Hord. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Wayne Register; her children, Thomas Matthew Register and wife Shannon, and Sarah Register Smith and husband Brian; grandchildren, Thomas Charles and Thomas Jack Register, and Abigail, Juliet, Ian, and Violet Smith; siblings, Linda Hord, Sharon Rainer and husband Ron, and Doug Hord and wife Diane; and sister-in-law Carolyn Finch and husband Richard, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
