From her funeral service at Saint James Episcopal Church, I, Audrey Tamm Markos, read the following:
My Mother Betty, led a full life. She celebrated her 90th birthday December 30, 2015. She was the Daughter of David and Ruth Bennett, sister to her younger brother Richard. She grew up in Chicago and lived through the depression. Luckily she lived close to her family which helped each other. She often spoke of her cousin Barbara and her Great Aunt ida and Uncle Carlson. She graduated high school from Amundsen High School and attended Northwestern University for a year. Many boys from her high school entered WWII and mother was a hostess at the neighborhood USO hall and went to dances at Ft. Sheridan. In the Korean war she was a Gray Lady with the Red Cross organizing activities for them. The Red Cross was so impressed by her organizing skill that they wandered her to work for the Red Cross but required a college degree which she did not have. She had a career working in Chicago in advertising at the merchandise mart which she enjoyed immensely She joined the order of the Eastern Star in 1952 and was Worthy Matron for a year. She met my father, Heino or Hank as he was called by Mom, in 1953 after his stint in the Army during the Korean War. She didn't remember him but she was going to the beach anyway at Lake Michigan so asked him to come along. Dad showed her where she had written her name in his address book (not a black book but red book). Anyway, Mom said the waves of Lake Michigan kept pushing them together. They were married in 1958 and my brother Henry was born. They moved to Urbana ,Illinois where my father finished his degree in Chemical engineering at University of Illinois. They went to upstate New York when Dad got a job for General Electric. They were there for 4 years then moved to New Jersey where Audrey was born. We also lived in Maryland for 6 years which Mom really liked and she was active in the Methodist Church in the ladies group and choir. We went back to Illinois and then to New York again but finally settled in Richardson, Texas for where Mom lived 18 years. My parents lived close to us during our residency in Dallas and helped care for us by making good dinners many weekends and helped care for our son Fritz when he was too sick o go to his daytime. My parents enjoyed Fritz immensely. They traveled to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Florida and enjoyed Dad's retirement for a few years. Then in 1993 my father passed away suddenly in Banff, Canada while they were on a trip.
My Mother moved to April Sound in 1995 after Alex was born and enjoyed the woman's club and playing bridge. Lizzy , her third grandchild, was born in 1998. We would go to April Sound pool with the kids and Mom would come boating with us. She came on trips with Ferenc and I to Las Vegas, with me to Philadelphia, and with the family to Padre Island, California, Hungary and Romania and Germany, Hill Country evacuations during Hurricanes to Austin and Fredericksburg, And Bahamas and enjoyed family holiday events like Easter and Thanksgivings in Houston at Claudia's mother Maria Markos house and Christmas with us at home. Also she attended birthday parties of the kids and school events at St. James School. She was a very loving, supportive and protective daughter, wife, mother , mother-in-law, aunt and grandmother. My mother typed a biography of herself and said in conclusion"I am thankful of the life I have had, and for my relatives and friends".
