On January 3, 2025, Captain Arthur Lee Dozier III of Conroe, TX, entered eternal rest in Heaven. Beloved son of Arthur Lee Dozier Jr. and Theresa Winstead Dozier, Art was born on October 15, 1936, in Raleigh, NC. His parents were immensely proud of their young man who grew to become a hero in every sense of the word. Art journeyed with Lewy Body Dementia for the last 14 years. At his side throughout was his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Dozier.
Art graduated from Needham B. Broughton High School in 1955. His education also included architectural studies at NC State before graduating from the University of North Carolina as a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and a distinguished ROTC Air Force graduate.
Following his years at UNC, Art traveled to Valdosta, GA, to begin his Air Force career. During pilot training, God answered his prayers by bringing Betty Pace Dozier into his life which fulfilled his desire to marry a young, Christian lady. The marriage of Lieutenant and Mrs. Dozier took place on October 15, 1962, in Bainbridge, GA, and thus began their adventure. Art’s first assignment was to Altus Air Force Base where the couple’s first two children, Lee and Diana, were born. It was here that Art and Betty decided to dedicate their lives to serving in the church.
In 1967, Art began his 34-year career as a Continental pilot in Los Angeles, CA. The family grew as they welcomed their third child, Daniel, in 1970. In 1977, Art moved with his family to Cut and Shoot, TX, to continue working for Continental Airlines based out of Houston Intercontinental Airport. At age 60, Captain Art Dozier left his “in-charge” position to become the second officer on the DC-10. Art took his last flight with Continental shortly after 9/11 before retiring.
Art and Betty were blessed beyond measure living in TX where Art continued to share the message of Jesus Christ as a Gideon. Art and Betty enjoyed teaching Bible study at First Baptist Church of Conroe where they cherished their time ministering to young singles while opening their hearts and lives to many. At First Baptist Church, Art served as an active deacon until his life was changed by Lewy Body Dementia. He loved working with the young men of the church as a leader of Royal Ambassadors. Since Betty was an active member of the choir, one of her favorite memories of Art was seeing him enter the backdoor of the church on Sunday mornings while they sang. Art loved music but was not a singer. He would sit in the back row and direct the music while Betty sang with the choir.
Captain Arthur Lee Dozier III lived by the teachings of Isaiah 52:7. As a layman, he shared the love of Jesus throughout his life, at church, and as a 727 captain. In his retirement years, he continued to share the message of Christ in their beautiful Cut and Shoot neighborhood, where he and Betty hosted Bible studies, organized Christmas caroling, and served as community leaders and mentors.
Art is survived by his loving wife Betty Pace Dozier. He will forever be cherished by his children: Arthur Lee Dozier IV, married to Joy Dozier; Diana Dozier Ellis, married to Keith Ellis; and Daniel Wesley Dozier, married to Lori Dozier. Art's 8 grandchildren were loved by him more than they will ever know: Lydia Ellis, Arthur Lee Dozier V, William Dozier, Preston Ellis, Caroline Dozier, Andrew Dozier, Anabel Dozier, and Eleanor Dozier. Art is preceded in death by his siblings Doris Brannock and Wynn Dozier. His influence is also continued in the lives of his surviving siblings, Tommy Dozier and Terry Hailey, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends.
On January 2, Betty wrote in her journal, “Oh Lord, my God, I believe Art is on his way to You. I trust You with every breath we breathe.” Those thoughts continued for Betty as her hero took his last breath to go to the place prepared for him by the One who gave his all for Art, Jesus Christ. That eternal life is offered for every man, woman, and child who will accept Jesus Christ as their hope for Heaven and an abundant life on Earth.
Betty Dozier shared this tribute of Art, the love of her life. She wishes to express her profound gratitude to all who have supported her and Art throughout the years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2025, beginning at 1:00pm with the Funeral Service beginning at 2:00pm at First Baptist Church, 600 S Main Conroe, Texas 77301.
