The daughter of Lt. Col. Edmund W. Gray and Carolyn Gray, Claire grew up in an Air Force family, moving frequently throughout her childhood. Of all the places she called home, Bermuda held a special place in her heart, and she returned there on several occasions. Claire had an idyllic childhood, growing up on Air Force bases and surrounded by the unending love of her family. It was a gift she passed on to her daughters and the love she showed all her family and friends stemmed from the love her parents instilled in her.
Claire attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Nursing became her chosen profession, though she devoted her early years to what mattered most to her: raising her two beloved daughters, Kimberly and Jennifer. When her daughters were older, Claire returned to nursing and spent 17 years at Louisiana Endoscopy Center in Baton Rouge before retiring.
LSU was woven deeply into Claire’s family history, spanning generations. Her grandfather, Giles W. Gray, was a professor at the university, and both of her parents attended LSU. Her siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and daughters carried on that proud family tradition, making the university a lasting connection across generations.
Claire lived in Thibodaux, Louisiana, for more than 20 years, where she raised her daughters and built lasting friendships. She later
moved to Baton Rouge, remaining close to family and friends and continuing to make the most of the time she spent with those she loved.
So many family and friends loved Claire’s kind spirit, boundless energy, wonderful sense of humor, and enthusiasm for life. Her mother often said she was “born running and never stopped,” and those who knew Claire understood exactly what she meant. She found so much joy in spending time with family and friends. Claire’s greatest gift was the love she gave and the way she made others feel. Her face would light up when she was with those she loved, and her hugs and bright smile had a special way of making you feel like the most important person in her world. Those are the things her family will miss most.
Claire especially loved “porch time” and the many nights she spent hosting family and friends on her wonderful back porch. Her door was always open. She treasured the annual gatherings in Fulton, Mississippi, where her family came together to enjoy fun and laughter on the deck overlooking the river. The days and evenings were filled with conversation, games, laughter, music, dancing and the simple pleasure of being together. These were the moments Claire cherished and her nieces and nephews will always remember the special spark she brought to every gathering.
Claire was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Baton Rouge, where she also volunteered. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she will be remembered with love by all those whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Frazier and Jennifer Morvant (Je); her grandsons, Brett Frazier and Remy Kaiser; her mother, Carolyn Gray; siblings, Wright Gray and Leslie Gray Groome (Tom), nieces Kristen Gray, Rebecca Groome Roman (Anthony), Anna Gray Harden (Josh), Erin Gray and nephew Thomas Groome (Lindsey). She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Lt. Col. Edmund W. Gray.
A memorial service will be held on January 9th at 11am at St Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Baton Rouge with visitation beginning at 10am.
She will be interred at Magnolia Cemetery near her father and grandparents. May Claire rest in the eternal peace of Christ, embraced by God’s everlasting love. May perpetual light shine upon her and may those who loved her find comfort in the memories she leaves behind. Her boundless energy, warm embraces, joyful spirit, and deep love for her family and friends will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or Friends of the Animals Baton Rouge (www.fotabr.org).
