Some people are just battle born. Cynthia Annette Herndon Johnson was one of them. A true Texas woman through and through. She loved fiercely, lived fully, and would do anything in her power to make sure the people in her life knew they were seen by her - really truly seen - in all of their grime and glory. It didn’t matter that you weren’t perfect. Who is? But once she chose to love you, it was unconditional and you weren’t getting out of it.
Things weren’t always easy for Cindy, but those adversities made her that much stronger and brought her innate grit to the forefront at all times. You never had to guess where you stood with her. She’d tell you. She came here to shake things up and make us all the better for it.
She was a hard worker who instilled that ethic into her sons to pass down to her many grandbabies. She leaves behind a legacy of speaking your mind and always letting people know exactly who you are and what you believe to be true. She was bold and unapologetic, and in a world of meek and mild people, she was a straight shot of whiskey, no chaser.
Often when crowds were gathered laughing about superfluous things, you could find Cindy quietly sitting back just observing. She’d weathered enough chaos in her life that she had learned to just appreciate peace and calm in her final years. But you better believe if you were one of the lucky few who got to cozy up next to her in her solitude, she was going to tell you how it was.
A breath of fresh air and honesty in a world so often focused on the wrong things. She knew exactly who she was, and due to her observant eye, she’d tell you who you were too. Raw and honest. Your only job was to live up to the excellence she so masterfully saw inside of you.
On February 19th, 2026, we lost a mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and a hell of a friend. And the world lost the type of woman they just don’t really make anymore… except here in Texas.
