After high school David worked for Superior Oil Company until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1952. Following his discharge, David returned to Superior Oil Company, where he continued his steady, dedicated work until retirement. Not one to sit still for long, David continued working after retirement at Automatic LP Gas Company, reflecting a lifelong commitment to providing for those he loved and to doing each day’s work with care.
David was married to Joann for nearly 65 years, and together they raised 3 children. He is survived by his loving wife, Joann Gunter; children John Leslie Gunter and wife Deana, and Jerri Ann Davidson; granddaughter Chelsea Peverill and husband Colton; special niece, Nerissa Amador; and special nephew Mike Doughtie; along with numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Berry Gunter, and adoptive parents, Anna and J.B. Weatherly; son, David M. Gunter, Jr.; and 11 siblings.
Those who knew David will remember a man whose kindness was evident in the way he treated others and in the affection he held for animals. He found deep enjoyment in the simple, enduring pleasures of life—fishing in Lake Conroe, hunting, and tending a garden—and he was especially known for the stories he liked to tell, shared with a gentle wit that brought warmth to everyday moments.
David also enjoyed attending Lone Star Cowboy Church in Montgomery, where he found fellowship and comfort in community.
