David was a native of Ft Bend County and proud to be a sixth generation Texan. He was a descendant of C.C.Dyer and Randolph Foster who was a member of the Stephen F. Austin Old 300. His family lived on the Bassett Blakely Ranch in Fulshear, TX where his father worked for his grandmother’s cousin, “Papa” Blakely.
David moved to his grandmother’s home in Richmond, TX at the age of 12 and graduated from Lamar Consolidated HS in 1954 after enjoying 4 years of playing high school baseball. He attended Wharton County Jr. College, Oklahoma and University of Houston where he received his BBA in Accounting and MBA in the 1982 Executive Program Class also becoming a licensed CPA.
David married Suzanne (Susan) Sengel in 1960 and they were blessed with two wonderful children, Kimberly Anne Forbes (Don) of California and David Martin who sadly died from cancer in 2018. He was proud of his 2 grandsons, Jeremy and Jonathan Hulsey and remained strong in their relationships.
David and Susan bought a farm in Brenham in 1991 as a weekend place but eventually moved there enjoying it full time for a wonderful 16 years fulfilling Susan’s childhood dream. In 2014 they moved back to Conroe resuming old friendships and making new ones. David’s bucket list was long and included receiving his black belt in Hapkido and playing golf as often as possible but proficiency in Spanish and guitar eluded him but he never gave up trying.
His career was spent in the oil & gas business mostly in the controller’s department managing E&P functions or auditing but his favorite position was a gas trader. He was transferred from Houston to New Orleans, Lafayette, Midland, Dallas and back to Houston where he retired from Exxon Mobil in 1998. Never satisfied with a laid back life he accepted a position as Director of Royalty Audit with the General Land Office in Austin eventually taking on part time audit work for lawyers he met while working at the Land office.
David fought cancer with a vengeance for over 2 years but sadly lost that battle. He was a wonderful interesting man we miss tremendously but know we will see again. Have no doubt he and son David are enjoying each other again after meeting son David’s daughter, Melissa Jane who passed away at birth. He knew and believed in Jesus’s promise from John 14:1-4 that he lives on and we will see each other again. God bless you until then my love!
David and our son’s cremains will be placed in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin in the same plot sometime in the Spring as well as Susan’s upon her passing.
