Ernest “Ernie” Payne lived a remarkable American story- one defined by perseverance, integrity, humility, generosity and love. Born on August 24, 1952, Ernie lost both of his parents at a young age and was raised by loving relatives who helped shape the resilient, hardworking young man he would become. Following high school, he began working at a local car wash before pursuing a career as a skilled tool and die maker. At the age of twenty-seven, he and his business partner, Bill Henneck, founded a manufacturing company that, through vision innovation, and countless hours of hard work, grew into a thriving enterprise employing nearly one thousand people. Ernie retired at the age of forty-seven after successfully selling the business, allowing him to enjoy many rewarding years pursuing his passions and spending time with those he loved.
Earlier in life, Ernie was married to Pam (Turnquist) Payne, with whom he shared the joy of raising their two children, Lisa and Michael. In 1995, Ernie met Cindy (Palmer) Payne, who would become his devoted and loving wife. They were married in 2002 and shared nearly twenty-four wonderful years together, building a life filled with travel, adventure, laughter, and unwavering companionship. Even after suffering a devastating stroke in 2017 and courageously battling cancer beginning in 2022, Ernie never allowed adversity to define him. He faced every challenge with quiet strength, unwavering dignity, and the same determination that had guided him throughout his life.
Success never changed the man Ernie was at heart. He believed deeply that when you have the ability to help others, you should. He generously provided homes for family members during times of need and was always ready to offer encouragement, wisdom, or a helping hand. Whether golfing, bowling, hiking, or proudly assembling and enjoying his beautiful 1968 Corvette kit car. Ernie approached life with enthusiasm, gratitude, and appreciation for craftsmanship. Above all else he treasured his family and friends.
Ernie is preceded in death by his parents, George and Georgia Payne; brother, Johnny Payne; and sister, Carole Howard.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Cindy (Palmer) Payne; children, Lisa Payne, Michael Payne and his wife Kim; grandchildren, Brett, Carson, Felicity, Kellen and Camden. Along with many extended family members and dear friends throughout Arizona, Texas, and Illinois, all of whom were blessed to know a man whose character equaled his accomplishments.
Ernie leaves behind far more than a successful business or the wealth he earned. He leaves a legacy of resilience, compassion, generosity, and unwavering integrity, and love for his family and friends. Those who knew Ernie will remember not only what he accomplished, but how he lived- with integrity, courage in adversity, generosity in prosperity, and kindness towards everyone whose life he touched. Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, his example will continue to inspire all who knew him, and his memory will forever remain a blessing.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Road, Conroe, Texas 77303, on Monday, August 10, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with a reception to follow.
