Pastor Gene Kendrick went home to His Savior Jesus Christ on April 13, 2017 after battling several health issues. “Bro. Gene” was born January, 14, 1941 in Lufkin, Texas. He made the greatest decision of his life as a child when he gave his life to Jesus Christ. At the tender age of 14, Bro Gene confirmed the call upon his life to preach the Gospel and to pastor a local church. Throughout his junior and senior high school years, he preached revivals, camps, and conferences. Upon graduation from high school, he married his high school sweet heart, Mavonee Elliott on July 11, 1959. She was the love of his life , his partner in ministry, loved by all, and a great wife and mother. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Cleo Kendrick of Lufkin. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mavonee Kendrick, and their three children: Paul Elliott Kendrick (Kathy) of Pipe Creek, Texas, Kevin Lee Kendrick (Debbie) of Conroe, Texas, Leigh Anne Hedges (Bryan) of Conroe, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Eric Kendrick (Savanna) of Boerne, Lauren Tierney (Clifton) of Pipe Creek, Brian Kendrick of College Station, Emily Partain (Kyle) of Conroe, Bethany Kendrick of Conroe, and Camden and Addison Hedges of Conroe. He also had two great grand children: Kaylee and Kendall Tierney of Pipe Creek. He is also survived by his brothers Joe Kendrick (Suzann) of Tyler, Mike Kendrick of Branson, MO, Gerald Kendrick (Beverly) of Lufkin, Larry Kendrick (Mary Beth) of Lufkin, and his sister Lucia Mosley (Jerry) of Lufkin. He had numerous nieces and nephews. Bro. Gene was privileged to pastor 3 churches in over 57 years: Midway Baptist Church (1959-1972), Lufkin, Texas, First Baptist Church (1972 1986), Alto, Texas, Mims Baptist Church (1986 - 2017), Conroe, Texas. He was also privileged to travel overseas on many occasions to minister including Kenya, Korea, Brazil and Austria. He was Baptist Student Union Director for Angelina Junior College and served for 8 years on the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. Bro Gene was an uncompromising, conservative, Bible Preacher and had the heart of a Pastor (shepherd) of God’s church. “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Visitation will be Monday, April 17th from 5-8 p.m. at Mims Baptist Church. Services will be Tuesday, April 18th at 10 a.m. at Mims Baptist Church with Dr. Bob Pitman and Dr. Tom Elliff officiating. Interment will follow at Conroe Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pastor Gene Kendrick Memorial Fund at Mims Baptist Church. This fund will be used for the care of his wife.
