

Hazel M. Van Derbur was born on October 31, 1919 in Oakwood, Texas to Hubert W. Marlow and Minerva S. Marlow and passed away on February 1, 2014 in Houston, Texas. She graduated from Manhattan High School, Manhattan, Kansas in 1935. She continued on to attend Texas College for Women and graduate from Kansas State University. Hazel is survived by her three children, Terry K. Pickel of Eagle River, Alaska, Janice L. Van Derbur of Houston, Texas and Douglas M. Van Derbur of Spring, Texas, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Charles A. Van Derbur, her sister Shirley Linscott, and her two brothers, Dr. Shelton Marlow and Dr. Guy Marlow.
She was a pianist and organist for the American Church both in Caracas and Maracaibo, Venezuela. After moving to Houston, TX she played for Memorial Dr. Methodist Church and Timber Ridge Presbyterian Church, The Houston Tuesday Musical Club Chorus and The Conroe Chorale. Hazel was an avid bridge player, needle-pointer, reader, and she loved to travel. She was a member of The Houston Tuesday Musical Club, AGO, Delphians and the Piney Pointers Chapter of The Needlepoint Guild. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a zest for life and was loved by all.
Hazel will forever be remembered for her music, her gentle manner, her love of family and her unique sense of humor.
There will be no service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care of Texas-Houston/333 N. Sam Houston Pkwy E, Ste 333/Houston, TX 77060-2416.
