Bill was a veteran of 2 wars. The first being The Korean War where he served as a navigator on the USS Randall (AP-115), a troop transport ship that was instrumental in removing troops at Inchon, Korea, in 1950. He also served on the USS Gregory (DD-802), in the mid 50s. After his Naval Service, he was selected for the aviation cadet program for the United States Air Force. He had a gift for mathematics and was selected to become a navigator/weapons officer for two all- weather intercepter aircraft: The F-89 Scorpion, followed by the F-101 Voodoo. He completed his career in the Air Force with 3 combat tours in Vietnam, in the AWAC aircraft, EC-121 Super Constellation. He spent 20 years on active duty, 4 years in the Navy followed with 16 in the Air Force.
In 1970, he retired from active service in the military and sold cars in the Conroe area for over 30 years for the Weisner family. Bill enjoyed wood working, and helped with many projects for the Montgomery County Restoration Society. He received a Governor's Award for his accomplishments. Bill had a stroke 4 years ago, and combined with worsening dementia, communication had become extremely difficult.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha Gilbert, and 2 sons, David, 62, and Michael, 65. Bill had 5 grand children and one great grand child.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 10:00am at Cashner Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Houston National Cemetery at 1:45pm.
