J. Gregory “Greg” Dyson was born February 4, 1946, in Wichita, Kansas, to Helen and Julian Dyson. He grew up in the Heights, attended St. Pius High School and the University of Houston, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War before receiving an honorable discharge.
Greg shared 44 years of marriage with his loving wife, Janice. He loved his children deeply, coming into their lives during their teenage years and treating them as his own. He was always there with guidance and support whenever they needed him. Greg adored his only granddaughter, Samantha, and enjoyed their mutual love of sports and singing. He loved his weekly trips with Robert to Walgreens and their monthly haircuts with his long-time friend Debbie.
During his school years, Greg was an avid sportsman who played baseball, bowled competitively, and even served as a cheerleader. Later in retirement, he enjoyed playing golf and running. He also loved to sing and was known to break into a song whenever one of his favorite songs came on, especially one by The Eagles. A lifelong Catholic and devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, one of his greatest joys was singing in the church choir.
He spent most of his career in crane sales, a field he knew inside and out and could talk about for hours, especially with Robert’s brother Greg. They would spend every family gathering discussing all the details. He especially took great pride in the role cranes played in the growth and development of the Gulf Coast.
Greg was a “Friend of Bill,” sober for more than 50 years—an accomplishment he was deeply proud of and one that reflected his strength and determination. He cared about people who were struggling and was always willing to help someone or give them a second chance. As a proud veteran, supporting other veterans was especially important to him.
Known for his dry wit and photographic memory, Greg was a whiz with numbers and statistics and could quote most athletes’ stats with ease. He followed a strict daily routine and rarely deviated from it. He also loved playing Solitaire on his PC, logging his scores daily. Greg had a lifelong love of animals and was rarely without a dog. Most recently, Sammy was a much-loved part of his daily life.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Julian Dyson and Helen Dyson; brothers-in-law Nick Comardo and William W. Lundy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janice, of 44 years; sister Nancy Comardo and his niece Laura; sister-in-law Sandy Lundy; daughter and son-in-law Janica & Robert McCool; son Tony Shaw; granddaughter Samantha McCool; numerous nieces and nephews; and close family, Greg, Tami & Christian McCool.
