James Ray Cox Jr., 80, of Conroe, Texas passed away on July 29, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, James R. Cox Sr. and Louisa Lewis Cox and by his wife, Barbara Jordan Cox. James is survived by his daughter: Brenda Cox Jackson and husband Greg; son: Steven Cox and wife Brandi; grandchildren: Dalton, Dakota and Devin Cox and Riley Jackson; sister: Jeanette Oliver; brother: John Cox and wife Sammye; caregiver and family friend: Pam Hawkins and family; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. James was born in Conroe, Texas on December 11, 1933. He began his 21 year career with the Marine Corps in 1953 after graduating from Conroe High School. James was a veteran of both the Korean War and the Viet Nam Conflict. While in the Marine Corps, Master Sargent James Cox received several honors including: National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal, Rifle Expert, Pistol Sharpshooter and several Good Conduct awards. After retirement from the USMC, James worked for the State Comptroller’s Office and the IRS. He was active in the church and served as a Deacon at New Bethlehem Baptist Church and then at Trinity Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 31, 2014, from the hours of 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Road, Conroe, Texas 77303. A Celebration of James’ Life will be held in the Cashner Colonial Chapel on Friday, August 1, 2014, at 10:00am with Rev. Robert Nichols officiating.
