James “Jim” Lee Davis, age 78, of Conroe, Texas, passed away June 24, 2026 while vacationing with his family in the Florida Keys. Jim was born September 10, 1947 in Pasadena, Texas to Louis Jones Davis “LJ” and Elizabeth Alyne (Potter) Davis who retired to Blessing, Texas. Jim was 1/8 Choctaw Indian and had the high cheekbones that lifted with his easy smile to prove it.
He was the most kind, patient and true gentleman of his time, even carrying a handkerchief to accompany an open door, warm smile, a wink of his blue eyes and funny line to put you at ease. His heart belonged to his best friend and wife, Dru Ann Davis, and he showed his love to her in words and actions every single day. She felt the same; they had a special love. Jim set the bar high as husband, father, and eventually “Pops.” His favorite people called him Pops and he recently had a cap made with that very saying.
Jim graduated Shawnee Mission West High School in Kansas. He played golf for the University of Kansas where he graduated with a B.A. in Commercial Art. As a summer gig, Jim illustrated cards for Hallmark. (He was quite sentimental and thoughtful so it was a great fit.) After graduation, he toured two years as a PGA Golf Pro.
Jim was known to many in Conroe for his golf savvy – serving as Director of Golf at River Plantation, Bentwater, and Panorama Country Clubs over many years. With incredible patience and an encouraging spirit, he shared his love of golf with many. Although he seldom golfed in his retirement years, Jim was excited about his upcoming PGA 50 Year Anniversary.
As great as he was at golf, he loved art and music. Jim could draw anything he saw. He loved cats and drew Garfield so well you couldn’t tell whether he or cartoonist Jim Davis (no relation) created it. If Jim wasn’t listening to his favorite radio station of “crooner” songs on KNCT 91.3 FM, (He liked the station so much, he sent them donations.) he was whistling or tapping a beat. In college, Jim was a drummer for the Fabulous Flippers band, even recording “Harlem Shuffle,” a real hit in Kansas City.
Jim met Dru Ann, who became a well-known principal in Conroe ISD, at Steak & Ale Restaurant when both were on dates with other people. They immediately hit it off and married almost 44 years ago in July. Together 24/7, he doted on her and everyone knew Tootsie and Pops were a package deal. In retirement, they worked together as landmen for several oil companies in Fort Worth and loved their life together.
From morning coffee on the back porch, watching daily news programs even late into the night, entertaining grandkids with ice cream and games, traveling to softball/baseball games and school functions for grandkids, Pops was happiest with Tootsie, often joking “Yes, Dear” was his favorite response. They loved their Sunday routine of church followed by lunch at Walk-On’s, which he was so proud of his son and daughter-in-law for opening in College Station and Conroe.
Jim may have been a Kansas Jayhawk, but his loyalty belonged to the Texas Aggies. A season ticket holder, he hated to miss a game and loved the time spent with his family in Kyle Field. He was proud his son, Cory, played football for A&M, and he selflessly gave his love, time, and dedication for years of practices, travel to football camps and more to further Cory’s goal of playing college ball….and continued to guide and cheer Cory on in life with his gentle, steadfast support.
Jim always put others first and leaves a legacy of kindness and encouragement. He did his best in every aspect of his life, whether cutting watermelon into perfectly square pieces, to meticulously packing his suitcase, or proving time and wisdom could fight any stain on any fabric. Christmas gifts from Jim contained thoughtful surprises and looked as if they were wrapped at a department store; he gave even the smallest of task his all. Jim knew Jesus and enjoyed the Men’s Breakfast Bible Study he joined months ago. He was the sweetest, kindest man you couldn’t help but love. Our Pops is dearly missed.
Jim was preceded in death by his Parents LJ and Elizabeth Davis.
He is survived by his beloved wife Dru Ann Davis, son Cory Davis (Jenny), grandchildren Blaise (11) and Fisher (9) Davis, Sister Sandra Hamilton, Sister Jackie Rouse (Marty), Brother Randy Davis (Mary), as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will take place Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at First Methodist Church in Conroe. Visitation starts at noon. Funeral Services begin at 1 pm in the chapel with Rev. Susan Kent presiding. A reception will immediately follow. Burial Service will take place at Garden Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Woodlands Community Hills Methodist Church for their building fund.
