James was born on July 24, 1966, in Lakewood, New Jersey. Though born there, his childhood was shaped by travel, as he spent his early years moving through many states and gaining a deep appreciation for different places and experiences. He later served proudly in the United States Army from 1985 to 1989. During his service, James was stationed in Germany, a time he remembered fondly. He had a love for the country’s history and beauty, taking countless photographs of castles and landscapes that reflected his sense of adventure.
After completing his military service, James returned to Conroe, Texas, where he put down roots and raised his family. He spent more than 20 years working in siding construction, known for his strong work ethic and dedication. Later in life, he worked in gas station pump servicing, continuing a life of honest, hands-on work.
James eventually moved to Wallace, Nebraska, where he spent the last eight years of his life, drawn by his deep love for hunting and the outdoors. An avid hunter like his father before him, James hunted many different animals throughout North America, but deer hunting was always his greatest passion. More than the hunt itself, he loved teaching others—patiently sharing his knowledge with his children, nieces, nephews, and friends, passing down tradition, respect for nature, and time spent together.
In quieter moments, James enjoyed painting model trucks and army tanks, a hobby that reflected both his creativity and his connection to his military service. Toward the end of his life, James cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren, creating memories through shared adventures, laughter, and time together—moments he held close to his heart.
James is survived by his children: Jennifer Lilley, Shawn Lilley, Baylee Lilley, Jason Lilley, Amanda Lilley, and Joseph Lilley; his mother, Sally Lilley; his sister, Susan Gilmore; and his brother, Andrew Lilley. He was preceded in death by his father, James Lilley, Sr. He is also survived by many grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.
James will be remembered for his love of family, his passion for the outdoors, and the lasting memories and traditions he shared with those he loved.
