Sarah Jane Martin, 91, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2018 in The Woodlands, TX.
Born in 1926 in Temple, TX she was raised on a cotton farm outside Marlin. At an early age she learned the value of hard work and a good education.
She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from East Texas State University in 1945 and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Houston in 1947 at the age of 21. She taught for 17 years and was an elementary school principal in the Houston area for 15 years before retiring. She was married to Horace Lloyd Martin for almost 50 years before his death in 2002.
After retiring she and her husband moved to the Conroe, Texas area where she was very active as a volunteer in her church, local ladies associations, St. Luke’s Hospital in The Woodlands, Montgomery County Choral Society and other organizations. After moving to Carriage Inn, an independent retirement community in Conroe, she led the resident’s council and became very involved in First United Methodist Church of Conroe as a volunteer.
During her retirements years, she loved organizing volunteers and working with others. She derived a lot of pleasure from working and always had fun while getting the job done. She made many friends through her volunteer work. She had a great sense of humor and was joking with others up until the day she died.
She said the greatest thing she has learned in life is to forgive, get along with others and to share.
She is survived by daughter, Linda Fogg, and her husband, Don, sons Wayne Martin and Glen Martin, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a visitation on Friday, July 27, at Metcalf Funeral Home, 1801 E. White Oak Terrace, Conroe, TX, 5-7pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 28 at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 4308 W. Davis, Conroe, TX followed by a burial service and interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
