Joan was preceded in death by her father, Warren Burrows; her mother, Jean Niblette; and her husband, Martin Bal, with whom she shared many years of love, partnership, and adventure.
She is survived by her sister, Judy Gahr; her daughters, Dawn Thompson, Robin Cairl, and Lori Bass; her stepdaughter, Susanne Bal; and her stepson, Roland Bal. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who were the center of her world.
Joan lived a life marked by curiosity, compassion, and quiet strength. Her love of horses began early and stayed with her throughout her life. In her later years, she returned to school and earned her Master of Divinity, a testament to her determination and her deep sense of calling. She went on to serve as a chaplain at Houston Methodist Hospital, offering comfort, prayer, and presence to countless patients and families.
Family was always at the heart of Joan’s life. She was deeply involved with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was an enthusiastic Astros fan, a lover of music who enjoyed playing the piano, and someone who never turned down a sweet treat — often being the first to suggest going out to get one.
Joan and Martin shared a love of travel, especially in their camper, exploring new places and enjoying being on the road together.
Above all, Joan had a tremendous love and caring for people. She carried a tender heart — one that extended not only to her family and friends but also to animals and anyone in need of kindness. Her gentle spirit and genuine compassion touched every life she encountered.
