John Edward Honek passed away on June 10th, 2020, in Conroe, Texas at the young age of 76. John was always determined and headstrong, a fighter to the very end. It was these characteristics that carried him through several medical interventions he had to endure over the past few years, with cancer finally taking his life. His family was pleased to learn that this spirit of perseverance was an inspiration to others in his life that were struggling with their own medical conditions.
John was born on November, 28th, 1943 in Queens, New York to parents John Honek, Sr. and May Hauptman Mich. He is survived by his two sisters, Cecilia Mich and Doris Shinka, his two children, John Honek and Jennifer Honek, who were both at his bedside for his final moments, and his two nephews, George Cook and Nicolas Moreno. He will be reunited in heaven with his parents, his sister Mary Honek, and her long-time partner Ben Gransasso, who we called Uncle Ben. John lived in New York until his 30s, when he made his way to Houston, Texas for better opportunities and started a family here, but he always remained close with his family in New York. It should also be mentioned that he lived for a brief period in Surprise, Arizona before finally settling in The Woodlands, Texas. He loved his time in Arizona and forged lasting relationships while there.
John was a jack of all trades, but his primary profession was as a driver. He had many different types of driving assignments, including as a limousine chauffeur when he proudly owned and operated F.M. 1960 Limousine Service. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his children and friends, visiting casinos, watching his favorite sports teams, and was a skilled poker player.
John’s family has chosen to honor his wishes of being cremated and no traditional public service has been scheduled. However, the family is discussing other options for a small gathering to celebrate his life, more details to come.
John’s family would like to send a special thank you to Vitas Hospice for providing exceptional care, comfort, and kindness to John in his final moments. They would also like to thank his friend’s and extended family that have reached out to share their stories, thoughts, and memories of John.
