John Henry Oliver Jr.

John attended Conroe High School until he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in August of 1951. He served twenty years in the U. S. Marine Corps with two tours of Vietnam. He retired in 1971 with the rank of Master Sergeant.

John enrolled in Sam Houston State University in 1971 and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education. He received his Master of Education in 1976 with certification in administration.

He married Scherry Freeman Oliver on December 26, 1991 in Hawaii. John and Scherry lived on their ranch in Old Waverly until their move to Magnolia in the summer of 2014.

John taught elementary school for seven years in the Conroe Independent School District. During his teaching career, he served as assistant principal at Reaves Intermediate.

John changed careers and became a Certified Petroleum Landman. For twenty-five years he worked for various oil companies throughout the United States. The last fifteen years, John worked with Scherry for Patterson Petroleum, Inc.

John was a 32nd degree Mason and a Knight’s Templar. He belonged to the York Rite, Scottish Rite, Shriners, and Masonic Blue Lodge.

His interests included reading and watching college football.

John was a member of Thee Evergreen Congregational Church in Evergreen. The congregation, under the pastorage of the Davidhizar family, led him closer to Christ.

John was preceded in death by his parents John Henry Oliver, Sr and Elva Oliver, and his brothers, Earl Brookshire and Kenneth Oliver.

John is survived by his wife Scherry, son Robert Oliver and wife Pace, daughter Dee Oliver, Mindy Titzman and husband Joey, Michal Hobson and Holly Grove. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother Jerry and wife Pamela, and close cousin, Richard Bagley and wife, Cheryl.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
