John Henry Spengel, 75, of Willis, Texas, passed away surrounded by family on August 14, 2022, after a brief illness. John was born in Highland, IL on January 14, 1947, to Henry and Dorothy Spengel, and shared a special relationship with his aunt and uncle, Verna and Harvey Hood. After exceling in football, baseball, basketball and track at Highland High School, John attended the University of Missouri where he played football for the Fighting Tigers and earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. Despite offers to play football in 1968 for the Baltimore Colts and the Cincinnati Bengals, John chose to accept an offer to work for Shell Oil Company where he remained a dedicated employee for more than 46 years.
John met the love of his life, Andrea Siever Spengel, in high school where they were chemistry lab partners. Their chemistry led to 55 years of marriage. In 1974 they relocated from Illinois to Conroe, Texas where they raised their four children. For the last 10 years they have lived in Willis, Texas where John enjoyed sitting on his back porch with Andrea and his loyal dog, Saddie, watching the birds he routinely fed. John lived his life for his family. Selfless and sentimental, he made all those around him his priority. He enjoyed telling stories, reminiscing about his childhood, and sharing his vast knowledge and advice to those closest to him. His grandchildren brought him joy and filled his retirement days with dance performances, volleyball games, baseball and football games, and equestrian show jumping.
John remained active going to the gym, walking daily, and looked forward to golf, a favorite pastime, especially with friends in Highland, Il during frequent trips to visit his mother-in-law. Having traveled the world, his preferred place was always on a sunny beach or floating in the ocean. In addition to caring for his family, John was an avid blood donor and animal advocate.
