Joyce May (Hodgkins) Smith passed away peacefully on August 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Following a car accident in February 2022, Joyce was bedridden, yet she faced her condition with remarkable grace and never once complained. Until the very end, she carried her feisty spirit, kindness, love for family and friends, and gratitude for a long life filled with wonderful and varied experiences.
Born and raised in Houston, TX, Joyce was the daughter of Barry Sr. and Lillian Hodgkins. Her life was defined by hard work, devotion to family, love of animals, and joy in caring for her flowers. She especially loved preparing festive holiday meals, no one was ever turned away from her table. Joyce also cherished her time at the beach, and her family treasures the many memories created at the Smiths’ beach house in Bolivar, TX.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Alfred R. “Freddie” Smith; her son-in-law, Louis Posinski Jr.; her grandson, Steven Smith; and her parents and siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Anne Posinski; her sons Alfred E. Smith and wife, Elaine, and Gregory A. Smith; six grandchildren—James, Luanne, Jared, Debbie, Melissa, and Anna; and five great-grandchildren—Zachary, Avery, Phoenix, Jordan, and Brenden—as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Pine Hollow Ranch Senior Living and the Devotion Hospice team for their compassionate care.
