Joyce Majors Werchan, of Brenham, Texas passed away on Oct. 23, 2020 at the age of 101. She was born April 21, 1919 in Elgin, Texas and is preceded in death by her husband Walter, mother Iva Wilson Majors and father Jonas Ellis Majors, sister Fern Friddell, brothers Neal and Billy Majors. She is survived by son Ron Werchan and wife Linda, sister-in-law JoNell Majors, grandsons Ellis Werchan, Greg Werchan and wife Andrea, Great grandsons Ivan, Leo and Scott Werchan. Nieces: Kay Valenta and husband Tommy, Patricia Case and husband Patrick, Dawn McMinn and husband Bobby, Denise Holley and husband Donald, Becky Thomes, and Janet Brown. Nephews: Dale Friddell and wife Debbie, Arthur Majors and wife Kita, Brian Majors and Noah Majors. Also, many great-nieces and nephews and Great-Great nieces and nephews. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Brenham.
As a child, Joyce grew up in Elgin with a couple of years in Miranda City where her dad worked in the oil fields. When they moved back to Elgin where she attended high school, she worked in the Majors Café for her Grandparents. She married Walter Werchan Sept. 8, 1940. She and Walter traveled to California where he had an Aunt and he worked on a ranch. She had her son Ronnie while in California and then they moved back to Texas so Walter could join the Seabees. After the War, They moved to Galena Park, Texas and then to Crosby, and eventually Montgomery Texas. After Walter passed, she moved to the Brenham area to live with Ronnie and Linda. Her last two years she lived in assisted living in Brenham. She loved family, and all of the years that she lived in Montgomery she hosted Thanksgiving for her siblings and their families. She also liked to fish and they had a cabin on the San Jacinto River for several years. She was a people person and was always involved in organizations like PTA, Cub Scout den mother, church women’s groups and AARP. She worked as a waitress for the Mims Brother’s Café in Galena Park; then she worked the city sales desk for Coast Paint and Lacquer in Houston. After moving to Montgomery, she worked in the office at April Sound on Lake Conroe.
Visitation beginning at 9:00 am before the Service at 10:00am Wednesday Oct. 28th at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas Pastor Art Free officiating. Pallbearers: Carlos Daza, Joey Friddell, Russell Holley, Jason McMinn, Jeremy McMinn, and Micah Skinner. Honorary pallbearers: Adam Case, Patrick Case, Dale Friddell, Donald Holley, Bobby McMinn and Tommy Valenta. Burial will be at the Elgin Cemetery with graveside service at 2:45pm.
