Kathryn Mae Gorton was born in Batavia, a small town in upstate New York on November 15th, 1949. She was born into two old Batavia families, the Cole's And the Gorton's. Her father, Edward Dean Gorton, Jr. was son of Edward Dean Gorton Sr. and Kathryn Gorton. Her mother, Barbara Ann Cole Gorton was the daughter of the surgeon, Dr. Irwin Cole and Ethyl Spicer. Kay lived with her parents and three brothers on a fifty-two-acre home outside Batavia.
Kay graduated from Stetson University and married Thomas Harlan Thompson. Tom was a pilot and Vietnam war veteran decorated with two bronze stars. Tom's career moved Kay to Dallas, TX and Lewisville, TX where she developed a nursing career. She had two sons, Bryce and Chris. Another career-move in 1987 placed Kay and her family in Fort Collins, CO where her mother and three brothers lived. Kay acquired a real estate license. Years later Kay and her family moved back to Montgomery, TX. A life around Lake Conroe, a home in the golfing and boating community of Bent Water Estates, and a career in real estate awaited her. Kay's career as a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker involved recognition as a Certified Financial Specialist, Accredited Buyers Agent and a USAC and Cartus Relocation Agent.
Kay lived an active life in her faith, in her studies of family genealogy, in her volunteer work with the American Cancer Society, Children's Miracle Network, and Make A Wish Foundation. She was involved with her sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, PEO Sisterhood, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Kay loved to travel and was out of the country at least once a year for most of her life. She found time to become an accomplished cook, gave great parties, and somehow her Christmas packages were always the first to arrive.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Harlan Thompson who died in July 2018 at the age of 70. Kay is survived by her sons, Bryce Cole Thompson and Christopher Wayne Thompson, her grandson Jayden C. Thompson, granddaughter Isabella Mae Thompson, brothers Edward (Ty) Gorton, Jeffrey Irwin Gorton, Mark Cole Gorton, her father, Edward Dean Gorton Jr., stepmother Patty Gorton, step sisters Gloria Casey and Su Gates, nieces Casey Jean Gorton, Ashlyn Kay Gorton, Kristyn Sue Gorton, nephews Cole Douglas Gorton, Samuel Slade Gorton, and David Cole Gorton. She is also survived by a continuing brood of grand nephews and grand nieces all of whom have met and known their great aunt.
Kay leaves this world behind known as a generous and giving person, supportive of her family, and counted on in times of need. There are dozens of family members, friends, and co- workers that will miss her presence here on this earth. Goodbye Sister Superior.
