She was born on February 7, 1949, in San Francisco, California, where she spent most of her childhood with her sisters and brother, obtaining a high education and helping others. Melanie eventually migrated to Texas, where she built a family of her own.
Along with raising her two children, Matthew and Christina Mills, Melanie dedicated over 30 years of service as a social worker for the State of Texas, specializing in Medicare, Medicaid, and food stamp programs. Her work was not just a career but a calling—she spent her life advocating and supporting others, offering dignity and kindness to those in need.
Melanie was a devoted Catholic whose faith was the foundation of her life and motivated her to spread goodwill. She kept a daily prayer list of over eighty people, lifting each of them up in prayer every single day. Her deep spirituality, quiet generosity, and unwavering belief in the power of Mother Mary, God, and Jesus were sources of strength and comfort to her, to her family, and to her community.
Melanie’s heritage is carried on by her accomplished daughter, Christina Mills Kendall, and her warm-hearted son, Matthew Mills, who each have lovely children, as Melanie was a proud and adoring grandmother to Kaya Mills, Savannah Kendall, and Brooklyn Kendall, all of whom brought her endless joy and pride.
Melanie’s legacy lives on in the kindness she acted on, the wisdom and stories she shared, and the quiet yet passionate strength she modeled for those around her each day. Her unwavering devotion to her faith, her family, her education, and those in need will be remembered always. She will be deeply missed, and she will be forever cherished in the hearts and spirits of the people who loved her.
