Michael attended some college before building a life defined by steady work, practical skill, and an uncommon ease with people from every walk of life.
For much of his career, Michael worked as an apartment maintenance supervisor and was a longtime member of Carpenters Local 213. He also owned and operated a small construction company for many years, working in and around Tomball, Conroe, and Magnolia, Texas. In the later part of his career, he traveled with construction companies remodeling restaurants—bringing with him the same dependable workmanship and problem-solving spirit that friends and family came to rely on.
Michael was married to Betty Fix Shanahan for approximately three years, and together they had a son, Michael Shanahan Jr. Betty remained a meaningful and valued part of the family’s life, and in time their relationship became one rooted in enduring friendship and mutual respect. Michael later met Linda Adams, and they were married for almost 52 years. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and yelling - as family is not always a bed of roses, and it keeps life interesting and the steady presence of someone who could be counted on—especially when something needed fixing, mending, or simply making right.
Known for a greeting that often began with “Hey Buddy,” Michael had a gift for connection. He never met a stranger, and he could strike up a conversation with anyone—from the homeless to CEOs—making people feel seen and welcome. He was also known for bringing “strays” home, both people and animals, and it was never quite certain who might arrive with him. Beneath that easygoing sociability was a truly generous heart—one that would lend a helping hand without hesitation, and, more than once, would give the shirt off his back.
In his free time, Michael enjoyed fishing, though he often loved the talking and visiting at the lake as much as the fishing itself. Music was a constant companion in his life, as were the simple joys of taking family and friends out to eat, spending time together, and heading out on spontaneous, unplanned road trips. Whether solving a problem, sharing a meal, or offering help to someone in need, Michael’s presence carried a steady reassurance: if there was a way through, he would find it.
Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Geraldine Shanahan; his father, Francis Shanahan Sr.; his stepmother, Ruby Shanahan; his brother, Francis (Butch) Shanahan Jr.; his sister, Beverly Stringer; his brother, Patrick Shanahan; his grandson, Baby Brad Lee Shanahan; and his great grandson, Baby Dean Christopher Cox.
Michael is survived by his wife, Linda Shanahan; his son, Michael Shanahan Jr and wife Jeanette; his son, Donald Shanahan and wife Deanna; and his son, Bradley Shanahan and wife Meighan. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Cameron Shanahan and wife Cayla; Hermione Shanahan; Abby Shanahan; Nicole Cox and husband Taylor; Christian Shanahan and wife Kylie; Skylar Shanahan and partner Alex Carter; Wesley Shanahan; Kaleigh (Bella) Berman; and Brayden Shanahan; as well as his great grandchildren, Carson Shanahan; Piper Cox; Walker Cox; and Waylon Shanahan; and numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Michael’s life was marked by hard work, openhearted generosity, and a rare ability to make others feel like friends. His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the people he helped, and the countless everyday moments made better simply because he was there.
