Naomi was a loving daughter, wife and mother. She was also a registered nurse, receiving her degree from Hermann Hospital and the Army Service. She is preceded in death by her parents, Calvit Bertrand “Punch” Wagers and Willie Mae Selman Wagers, her brother, Calvit Bertrand “Bert” Wagers, Ivy Marie Wagers Allison, and Patricia Wagers Gillis, her loving husband, Fred Lovic Hairston, Sr and her son James Edison Hairston. She is survived by her son, Fred Lovic Hairston, Jr. and his wife Melissa “Lisa” Dee McDaniel Hairston, 3 grandchildren, John Lovic Hairston, Justin Lee Hairston and his partner Lindsey Dowell, Nicole Hairston Sanford and husband Jason. She has 4 wonderful great grandchildren, and was happy to watch them grow up. They are James Walker Hairston, Blaine Preston Hairston, Isely Sanford and Nolan Sanford. She also has numerous nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren who have blessed her life.
In her nursing career, she was a nurse for Sadler Clinic, Conroe ISD schools, home health and the WIC program which is in the old Safeway Grocery Store building.
She was born in the old Wagers home on Main Street in Conroe and then moved with her family to Silverdale Drive. Where she stayed until she went to Houston for her nurses training. She married Fred, Sr. in 1951 and lived various locations in Texas for a few years and then returned to Conroe and helped nurse her grandparents Harvey B “Mack” and Ellen Ashe Selman, her mother, her husband and her son in the last years of their lives. She moved in 2012 to Temple, Texas to be near her son, Fred, Jr. and his family and her grandson Justin and his family, then later moved to Rogers to be closer to the family.
After the death of her husband, she collected “Red Birds” and had over 200 “birds” around her. She was known to wear a “Red Bird” sweatshirt and have a “Red Bird” throw over her legs. She loved to watch the live “Red Birds” come and feed outside her windows. She was loved and known as the “Red Bird” lady at Legacy Nursing Home in Cameron, Texas.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 8, 2025, from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Cashner Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 2:00pm in Cashner Colonial Hall with burial following in Conroe Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Justin Hairston, John Hairston, James Hairston, Blaine Hairston, Nathan Peet and Justin Dowell.
