Norma Jean "Dinnie" Sherrod

Norma Jean Baker Sherrod, affectionately known as Dinnie, loving mother, devoted wife, adoring grandmother, fiercely loyal friend and faithful servant of Jesus Christ passed away peacefully at home on August 21, 2012, at the age of 75. She is survived by her daughter Diana Sherrod Sartin and her husband Baron; daughter Delann Sherrod and her partner Leslie Spencer; son Brent Sherrod; grandchildren Ross Sherrod; Morgan Sherrod Lund and her husband Dave; Darby Sherrod, Jessie Sartin Gardenhire and her husband Cale; Jill Sartin and her fiancé Tyler Gentles and Jackson Sartin; great-grandchildren Grayson and Scout Lund. Numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews also survive her. Waiting for her at Heaven’s gate was her husband of 55 years, Warren Sherrod. She was also preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Clemateen Evans Baker and three loving sisters and one brother: Elma Martin, Ina Bone, Gerald Baker and Dwilda Daw. Dinnie was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on March 13, 1937 and was raised in Conroe, TX. She was a 1955 graduate of Conroe High School and married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Warren, on August 25, 1956. Together, they ran Sherco Construction for 47 years. Warren was the boss, but Dinnie was the glue that held it altogether. There were numerous hobbies: sewing, bowling, quilting, playing cards and travelling but she lived for her family. Being a wife and mother was her first love and it was a role she relished. Her children and grandchildren came first and she never missed an opportunity to be at each of their events or teach them how to bake something, sew something or listen to their every word. She was the quintessential mother and grandmother and the void she leaves will be immensely hard to fill. Dinnie was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Conroe where she was involved in the Ladies Luncheon ministry, the Encouragers Sunday School class and mentoring young girls at a nearby school by making clothes for the beginning of their new school year. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for 45+ years where she served as the President and Treasurer of City Council. The Eta Eta chapter and Xi Lambda Kappa chapter both honored her as their Girl of the Year and the XLK chapter eventually evolved into a monthly luncheon amongst many dear friends that still continues. Bowling on Monday nights (& Wednesday mornings) and being involved with WIBC for 45+ years was a highlight for her. Traveling all over the U.S. bowling in tournaments with her friends brought her immense joy throughout her life. She was a sustaining member of the Conroe Service League and her daughters remember spending many Saturday mornings at the Bargain Box, watching her serve others. She was a member of the Montgomery County Fair Association serving on the Fair Queen Committee and in the Homemaking Division and also gave her time as the Treasurer for the American Business Women’s Association in the 80’s. She also found time to serve on the Montgomery County Heritage Museum Board of Directors and loved helping introduce the pioneer lifestyle to children through the highly successful summer Pioneer Camp. With all that has been mentioned, she still made time for her Houston Astros and Houston Oilers win or lose, through the highs and lows. In her retirement years, she cherished her Tuesday night card games with lifelong friends (Peggy Stevens, Olene Heasley, Margaret Ann Yocom, Joyce Beckwith & Sally Dunaway), the monthly Calendar Girls meetings with her Class of 55 friends, and RV’ing with Warren and the Meandering Methodists. The family would like to thank Kassandra and Christy of Lighthouse Hospice for their loving care and concern and to all of Mom’s friends who constantly showered her with cards, phone calls, visits and food since the death of our father and through her illness. In lieu of customary remembrances, donations in Dinnie’s name may be made to the First Baptist Church, 600 North Main, Conroe, TX 77301. Funeral services for Norma Jean Sherrod will be held Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 12:30pm in Cashner Colonial Chapel with interment following in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service, beginning at 11:30 on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at Cashner Funeral Home.
