Metcalf Funeral Directors

Robert (Bob) Martin Diamond died Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at his home in Montgomery, Texas. Bob was born on November 22, 1945, to Frederick Diamond and Elizabeth Armstrong Diamond.

An able sportsman, Bob played baseball and golf at Lamar High School, where he graduated in 1963. The Milwaukee Braves were interested in him as a catcher, but Bob decided to pursue his education and to stick with golf. After serving in the Navy, Bob pursued his education at the University of Houston and graduated with a degree in business. He continued to follow his passion for golf, becoming a PGA golf professional in 1979. Highlights included playing in the Byron Nelson for several years and the US Senior Open in 1996 and 2001.

After working as a golf professional at Quail Valley Country Club and Hideaway Lake, Bob become the golf pro at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin, Texas, in 1985, where he was known as “Mr. Club Pro.” While there, Bob inaugurated an annual golf tournament called “The Dog Days of Summer,” with the proceeds benefiting the Humane Society of Angelina County. Bob retired in 2007, though he continued to coach youth golfers. In retirement, Bob enjoyed traveling in his RV with his wife, Sonia, to visit friends and family and explore the country. He loved rescue dogs, enjoyed a lifelong fishing hobby, and also took pleasure in gardening, canning, and cooking.

Bob is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sonia, and his stepson, John Diamond (wife Amanda, stepson Robbie) of Lafayette, Indiana. Also surviving are his brothers Fred (Judy) Diamond and Tom (Laurie) Diamond. Bob was preceded in death by his stepson, Jason Loving. The family plans to hold a private remembrance ceremony. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Angelina County at https://angelinacountyhumanesociety.org/, or to the Junior Golf Program at Crown Colony Country Club at https://crown-colony.com/jr-golf/.
