Robert Joseph (Bob) Haskins, age 89, resident of Conroe, TX, former resident of Steubenville, OH, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 31, 2018. Bob was born on August 21, 1929 in Wheeling, WV. A lifetime resident of the Ohio Valley, Bob graduated from Tridelphia High School and later Bethany College. He then married the love of his life Margaret Anne (Peggy) Hillenbrand. After serving in the U.S. Air Force in the Korean Conflict, he returned to the Ohio Valley and started his lifelong career as an educator. Bob taught numerous high school Biology and English classes and sponsored multiple student activities during his career. Bob had a lifelong love of the arts and sports, directing countless high school plays, sponsoring the yearbook, and announcing sporting events. Throughout this time, he was also able to obtain his Masters of Arts in English through the University of Pittsburgh. His love of sports and the community led him into a 30 year career as a high school umpire. Throughout both careers, he was awarded many accolades including the John Hay Fellowship in Literature and induction into the Ohio High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. Upon retirement, he kept active in his community through memberships and participation in the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association, the American Legion Argonne Post 33, and the Knights of Columbus. Bob was also a volunteer at the Oakmont Country Club when they hosted major USGA tournaments. He was a beloved husband to Peggy for 58 years, a father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was very family oriented and loved spending time watching his children and grandchildren in their various sports, theatrical, and academic endeavors.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Ruth and his wife, Peggy. He is survived by his six children, Patti Orsini (Dan), Roberta Carducci (Dan), Cindy Baldwin (Sam), Michael Haskins (Amy), Pam Gibson (Marty), and Chris Roberts (Bill), his 17 grandchildren, nine (soon to be ten) great grandchildren, and numerous extended family members.
He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched.
The Funeral Mass will be held 10:00AM Monday, January 7, 2019 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow in Garden Park Cemetery.
