Sammye Batten Cox, 78, went home to be with the Lord on May 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on February 25, 1948, in Huntsville, Texas, to William Jennings Batten and Edna Earle Bruce Batten, Sammye lived a life filled with faith, gentleness, creativity, quiet strength, and a deep devotion to the people she loved.
Sammye graduated from Conroe High School in 1966. In 1965, during her time at Conroe High School, she met the love of her life, John H. Cox. They married on June 15, 1968, and were just days away from celebrating 58 years of marriage—a remarkable journey filled with devotion, laughter, shared adventures, and a deep, enduring love. Their bond was a testament to commitment and companionship.
Sammye earned her degree from Sam Houston State University and spent many years serving in Conroe Independent School District administration, as well as teaching English at Conroe High School. Her warmth and steady presence left a lasting imprint on countless lives.
As a member of Mims Baptist Church of Conroe, Sammye taught women’s Sunday School and shared God’s love with others. Her gentle spirit and servant’s heart were a true reflection of the grace God placed within her.
Sammye had a natural gift for beauty. She loved flowers and had a remarkable talent for arranging them—creating pieces that brought joy and comfort to others. She found peace in nature, especially in watching and feeding the birds around her home. She loved being outdoors, appreciating the quiet wonder of God’s creation. She was also an exceptional cook, known for meals that brought her family together and made everyone feel cared for.
Her home was filled with warmth, laughter, and even song—especially with her beloved Quaker parrot, “Cupcake,” who she adored and sang with daily. Sammye loved to travel and was a true foodie, always excited to explore new places and enjoyed meals out with her family.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Batten, whom she loved dearly.
Sammye leaves behind the family she cherished above all else: her husband, John H. Cox; her daughters, Ashley Cox Denton and husband John, and Christie Cox Kuhl and husband Mark; and her treasured grandchildren, Zachary Kuhl and Zoe Kuhl, who lovingly called her Granny and brought her endless joy. Her legacy remains in the love she gave and the many lives shaped by her kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Jerry Chaddick officiating. Visitation will take place that morning from 9:00–11:00 AM. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at Antioch Cemetery in Lovelady, Texas, with Mr. Wayne Russell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests honoring Sammye through contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association—though she dearly loved flowers and found such joy in their beauty.
Sammye will be deeply missed and forever lovingly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
