Our beloved Tom now faces Jesus face to face just as he dreamed about and spoke about unashamedly to so many people over the years. He was a cherished husband, brother, uncle, son, stepfather, grandfather and friend who was always selflessly interested in helping those less fortunate than he.
Tom was raised in the Spring Branch area of Houston where he graduated from Spring Branch High School in 1965. He attended the University of Texas until he was drafted into the Army in 1968 and served during the Vietnam conflict.
Tom always loved clothing and began working part time during high school at local men’s clothing stores to earn extra money. This continued during college and afterwards and he made a career out of custom clothing sales for most of his working career.
He met his wife, Mary Jane (MJ), in 1990 thanks to a conspired plan by his dad Blaine who lived in the same neighborhood as MJ who was a widow. They had much in common especially the joy of having helped to raise several stepchildren each. They spent many hours getting to know each other and married in 1995.
Tom and MJ enjoyed golfing, snow skiing, music and traveling. They were blessed to be able to retire early in 2000 which was fortuitous in that they were able to help Tom’s mother LaVerne when she began having serious medical issues.
Tom and MJ joined First Baptist Church Conroe in 1996 and immediately loved participating in choir, Bible study, and missions work. They were the original coordinators for FBC for the newly created Family Promise program and remained leaders for about 15 years.
Tom had a real love and gift for evangelism and never let an opportunity go by without talking to someone about Jesus. For many years he volunteered at the Montgomery County Jail working as a chaplain giving Bible study classes and later counseled one to one with men inmates. It was a great love for him and he continued until Covid interrupted the program. Tom had a great love for music. From an early age when he sang with his grandfather who played the piano for church functions to later on in high school, college and in the Army, he was always involved in music. He was able to still sing in the last few years when his speech failed. He particularly loved classical and opera music and sang along with it even in his last days. One of his caregivers remarked “he is singing in Heaven with Pavarotti now!”
The family would like to thank his kind-hearted caregivers who were such help over the past year: Meagan, Debi, and Celina were so compassionate in their aid to him & he loved being with them.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother, LaVerne Lohmeier; father, Blaine Lohmeier; brother, Gary Lohmeier.
Tom is survived by wife, Mary Jane (MJ) Stumph Lohmeier; sister, Nina Donaho (Joe); grandson, Charlie; aunt, Paula Bruner (Herbert); and numerous cousins and stepchildren (both Tom & MJ).
